It’s November, which means the holidays are here! You’re busy and the last thing you need is for you or one of your family members to get sick or injured. So, in between shopping, cooking, decorating, attending recitals and generally being festive, here are 8 tips to keep you and your loved ones healthy and safe this season.

1. Keep Your Hands Clean

Washing your hands often is one of the best ways to ward off colds, flu, COVID-19 and other nasty germs that are out in force at the mall, the classroom and the office. Rubbing hands together briskly for at least 20 seconds with soap and running water should do the trick.

2. (Try to) Eat Healthy and be Active

We know there are going to be more temptations to overindulge at this time of year, but try to make a conscious effort to eat a little healthier when you can. Have fruit for breakfast, enjoy a protein shake here and there so when you do eat more plate of Thanksgiving turkey, you don’t feel horrible. Then, get some exercise. Fit in a workout at the gym, or go for a walk while you’re visiting the in-laws.

3. Don’t Get Stressed

Repeat after us, “Everything does not have to be absolutely perfect this season.” You may be late for a party, that dessert may be a little lumpy and the perfect gift for your sister might have to wait until next year. Take deep breaths, get support from your family and for goodness sake, make sure you get enough sleep.

4. Don’t Smoke

The only thing smoking this holiday should be the chimney or your turkey.

5. Drink Responsibly

Hangovers are no fun. Holiday hangovers are worse because you usually have something to do the next day. Try limiting drinks, or have a glass of water in between glasses of wine.

6. Bundle Up

When the temperature dips, dress warmly, add layers and bundle up those babies.

7. Keep an Eye on the Kiddos

Watch the kids when they are playing or eating. Hard candies and small toy pieces can be choking hazards. Make sure directions are followed and toys are used appropriately.

8. Prevent Injuries

Injuries are lurking everywhere during the holidays. So, be careful with sharp knives while large groups gather in the kitchen, use a stepping stool while putting up decorations, wear helmets when riding that new bike or skateboard, and keep kids and pets away from candles.
